Lightroom Quick Tip - How to use Denoise and Super Resolution on the Same Image!

Lightroom Quick Tip - How to use Denoise and Super Resolution on the Same Image!

Two of the most impressive features added to Lightroom in recent years are the AI-based “Denoise” and “Super Resolution” features that live in the “Enhance” tool. Denoise has been something of a game-changer in particular. Unfortunately though, you can’t use both of these functions on the same image. Or can you?

In this video I show you the simple work around that gets around the limitation. It’s pretty straight forward, and the only thing you really need to be careful of is the order in which you do the steps.

For those who don’t want to watch the video, the trick is to send your image to Photoshop between running the two functions. You don’t have to do anything in Photoshop, just save your image again. However there are some important things to consider.

Firstly, you must use Denoise before using Super Resolution. Denoise only works on a RAW file so if you use Super Resolution first, Denoise will no longer work.

I also recommend that you do these steps as the last step in your image editing workflow. In other words, complete all your edits first. While you can run Denoise at any point without loosing any edibility, you should keep the final steps till the end.

Super resolution should be the last step. But because Super Resolution won’t work on the DNG that Denoise creates, you need to trick it by turning it into a Tiff or a Photoshop file. There are many ways to do this, but in my opinion, the simplest is to just send the image to Photoshop, and then save it. This will send it back to Lightroom as a Tiff or PSD file depending on your settings. You will then be able to run Super Resolution on the resulting Tiff or PSD file.
